Kalispell CampusThis honors course examines the development of the atomic bomb and its profound and enduring impacts on science, politics, public policy, economics, and society. Beginning with the scientific foundations of nuclear physics and the Manhattan Project, students will explore how the creation of atomic weapons reshaped global power structures and ushered in the modern nuclear age. The course will analyze the ways nuclear weapons influenced international relations, including Cold War dynamics, deterrence theory, arms races, and nonproliferation efforts. Students will investigate how political leaders, scientists, and institutions navigated the ethical dilemmas posed by nuclear technology, and how these decisions continue to shape contemporary foreign policy and global security. • These 4 credits can count toward a Science-N or Social Science B graduation requirement.

Prerequisite: acceptance into the Scholars Program.This course involves critical analysis of major themes of the Social Sciences-B (Economics, History, Political Science) coordinated and examined through themes of the sciences. Skills in critical reading/analysis and the development of ideas through argument, writing, and oral communication will be utilized in order to engage student's knowledge, imagination and creativity.
